DCA kills cancer cells and shrinks tumours</h3>
Unfortunately, there was no support forthcoming from pharmaceutical companies for clinical trials because DCA is a widely available chemical and cannot be patented. Nevertheless, it had been in use for more than 30 years with a good safety record, and there was a strong case for testing the drug in human cancer patients.<br />

Results Of First <u>Clinical Trial Promising</u></h3>
With funding from private foundations and public donations as well as the Canadian National Institutes of Health, the team c<b>arried out the first clinical trial on five patients with glioblastoma</b> (<u>a fast-growing malignant brain tumour <b>nearly always fatal</b></u>), and the results were published in 2010 [2]. Of the five patients treated, <u><b>one </b>of the three with terminal cancer <b>died </b>after 3 months on DCA</u>, <b><u>but the rest were clinically stable at month 15</u></b> of <b>DCA therapy</b>, and still alive at month 18. Three of the patients showed some <u>evidence of the tumour shrinking on magnetic resonance imaging</u>. The results were promising.<br />

Canadian scientists tested this dichloroacetate (DCA) on human's cells; <b>it killed lung, breast and brain cancer cells and left the healthy cells alone.</b> It was tested on Rats inflicted with severe tumors; their cells shrank when they were fed with water supplemented with DCA. The drug is widely available and the technique is easy to use.<br />

In human bodies there is a <b>natural cancer fighting human cell</b>,<b> the mitochondria</b>, but they need to be triggered to be effective. Scientists used to think that these mitochondria cells were damaged and thus ineffective against cancer. So they used to focus on glycolysis, which is less effective in curing cancer and more wasteful. The drug manufacturers focused on this glycolysis method to fight cancer. This DCA on the other hand doesn't rely on glycolysis instead on mitochondria; it triggers the mitochondria which in turn fights the cancer cells.<br />

Ketogenic Diet Beats Chemo For Almost All Cancers</h2>
The low-carb, high-fat ketogenic diet can replace chemotherapy and radiation for even the deadliest of cancers, said <i style="font-weight: bold;"><u>Dr. Thomas Seyfried</u>, a </i><b>leading cancer researcher</b><b><i> and </i>professor<i> at Boston College</i></b>.<br />

In an exclusive interview, Dr. Seyfried discussed why the ketogenic diet has not been embraced by the medical community to treat cancer despite its proven track record both clinically and anecdotally.<br />
<br />
"The reason why the ketogenic diet is not being prescribed to treat cancer is purely economical," said Dr. Seyfried, author of Cancer as a Metabolic Disease. "Cancer is big business. There are more people making a living off cancer than there are dying of it."<br />
<br />
Radiation Therapy Is a Gravy Train for Hospitals<br />
<br />
According to Seyfried, the medical community is reluctant to publicly acknowledge the efficacy of the ketogenic diet for preventing and treating cancer because doing so would cut off the massive streams of revenue hospitals generate from chemotherapy and radiation treatments.<br />
<br />
It's a simple economic issue. There's no money in it for the hospitals, doctors, and drug companies to prescribe a ketogenic diet when they can make hundreds of millions of dollars from the standard of care. Radiation therapy is a huge revenue generator for hospitals."<br />

For the first time in 44 years, people who have laughed at hearing the audio version of the hilarious “Pretty Little Dolly” song can see it actually being performed, too.<br />

The song was done by Sleepy Hollow voice-over actress Mona Abboud back in 1966 while she was guesting on “The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson.” Abboud pretended to be a little girl asking Santa, in the form of a song, for a doll that, among other things, peels when she gets sunburned and screams in pain when you break her leg. The little girl starts with sweet, innocent Shirley Temple cuteness but slowly segues into maniacal evil. “You put a plastic bag around her head, she’ll choke, turn purple and die,” the girl sings. She ends with a threat to Santa’s life if he doesn’t deliver the goods on Dec. 25.<br />

Though an audio recording of that bit often gets played on radio stations at Christmas time, the video has been unavailable. But when Abboud learned recently that Johnny Carson’s family was putting more of his show’s classic moments on DVDs, she reminded them of the bit. Since last week, when anyone calls up <a href="http://www.johnnycarson.com/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">www.johnnycarson.com</a>, the first thing they see on the home page is a still photo of Johnny talking to Mona. “A friend once told me that some people are just known all their life for one thing, and maybe ‘Dolly’ is my thing,” Abboud says. She’s thrilled by the website, but says she wishes the selection had shown Carson’s reaction better. He hadn’t been told by his staff what the song would be like — only that his guest was a specialist in doing children’s voices.<br />

The skit also has been preserved on YouTube, as have videos of several people pretending to be the same little girl as they mime along to Abboud’s recording.<br />

Until recently, treatment for hepatitis C fell into the good-but-not-great category, with only around 70 percent of patients being cured. And that was after as much as 48 weeks of a strict anti-viral drug regimen, including injections of interferon—which causes a number of debilitating side effects (loss of vision, sepsis, heart failure, and leucopenia.).<br />

Sofosbuvir is a much more potent killer of hepatitis C, with success in as many as 95 percent of patients. Even more, the medication only has to be administered for half of the time and has a remarkable safety profile.<br />

Sofosbuvir is the first compound in the NS5B polymerase inhibitor class. It interferes with the virus’s ability to replicate and make proteins. Sofosbuvir, is offering impressive cure rates for Hepatitis C patients with two subtypes of the disease – 93% among those with genotype 2 and 61% among participants with genotype 3.<br />

This is the first time in medical research that we have a cure for a viral disease. Both the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the European Medicines Agency (EMA) recommended approval of Sofosbuvir. The new potent antiviral drug combo (Sofosbuvir combination with ribavirin) may eventually replace interferon use for the majority of patients with hepatitis C.<br />

The prevalence of hepatitis C infection ranges from 0.4 to 3.5 per cent among the European member states. Often patients have no symptoms, so the majority of hepatitis C infected people don’t know they are infected.<br />
<br />
The hepatitis C virus spreads by contact with infected blood, such as injection drug use, sexual contact or through blood transfusions. Hepatitis C, if left untreated, can progress to cirrhosis, liver cancer and liver failure.<br />
<br />
Of the 7 major genotypes of hepatitis C, 1, 2 and 3 are the most common. In the USA, genotype 1 is the most common, while the most prevalent in Europe are genotypes 2 and 3. In the Indian subcontinent genotype 3 is the most common.<br />

Apple’s Worldwide Developer Conference keynote Monday is sure to have pleased some and disappointed others. At the annual confab of software developers for Macs and iDevices, CEO Tim Cook and other executives presented new versions of Mac OS X for computers and iOS for iPhones and iPads. Both systems appear to borrow from one another liberally, evolving to work in tandem much more elegantly.<br />

But there was another, arguably more radical product on display: Apple itself. There was no slick marketing video extolling its virtues. And there was no explicit mention of its “magical” changes by any of the executives that padded into the spotlight. But it was there, center stage at the Moscone Center in San Francisco. This is clearly a different (and perhaps more interesting) company than the one Steve Jobs left behind when he died three years ago. It seems a company that, increasingly, reflects the ideas, taste and sensibility of a group, rather than an individual.<br />

Apple observers even got a sense of what the company’s employees think of the question last year when it introduced a Lilliputian new desktop, the Mac Pro. Unveiling the machine, marketing boss Phil Schiller said curtly, “Can’t innovate my ass.” And last month when Internet Software and Services chief Eddy Cue said “We’ve got the best product pipeline that I’ve seen in my 25 years at Apple,” it was a not-so-subtle-nod to investors and fanboys not to worry—some cool stuff is on the way. Still, the fact that the company’s last all-new product, the iPad, came out in 2010 is going to be catnip for doubters until the world finds out what those products actually are.<br />

But where many people have been looking for a major new product—an iWatch, say, or an Apple-branded television set—the real innovation may have been in who runs the company and how. Under Jobs, Apple was a firm that largely brought in executives from less well known or glamorous outfits and grew them internally. Bob Mansfield, the technology guru, came from Raycer Graphics. Scott Forstall and Craig Federighi, the software guys, came with Jobs from Next. Designers like Tony Fadell and Jonathan Ive were essentially consultants from smaller firms who were convinced to sign on full time. And current CEO Tim Cook came from Compaq. (The only exception that comes to mind: Ron Johnson, who had a well-covered career at Target before helping create the Apple Stores.)<br />

But consider Apple’s executive bench today. Angela Ahrendts, the former Burberry CEO, is planning an overhaul to Apple’s juggernaut retail division. Paul Deneve, the one-time CEO of Yves Saint Laurent, is likely helping with the company’s wearable devices. And there are Apple’s two newest recruits, Jimmy Iovine and Dr. Dre,who are coming on as part of the company’s $3 billion acquisition of Beats Electronics. These are all executives who, by virtue of their star power, are likely to have a higher profile of their own.<br />

There are a lot of obvious reasons this is the case, not least of which that Apple is a much stronger, richer, more attractive company to work for than it was in the late 1990s. Then, Wired ran its famous “Pray” cover; now, it’s number 5 on the brand-new Fortune 500 list. And yet, even during the presentation this morning you could sense the shift. Keynotes have always had special guests and humorous asides, but today they seemed a little looser, a little more relaxed. Software head Craig Federighi called from backstage with a somewhat ham-handed hair and makeup malfunction, for instance.<br />
